Lesson 28: Presidential Summary (1865-
17. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)
Following President Lincoln would have been very difficult, as President Johnson would discover. A southern democrat, Johnson was the only member of Congress from the south not to secede with the rest of the Southern delegation. After Lincoln's assassination, Johnson would become president, though he was considered to be a traitor by Southerners and not liked by Republicans. Johnson would be one of two presidents to be impeached, though he was not removed from office. When he died in 1875, he was buried wrapped in an American flag with a copy of the Constitution.
18. Ulysses S Grant (1869-1877)
He is best known for leading the Union Army against General Lee's Confederate Army. Born in Ohio, he studied at West Point. At some point he was fined $20 for speeding, with his horse and carriage. During his presidency he would struggle managing the corruption in his government. After leaving office, he ended up in financial ruin, leading to writing his memoirs. After his death, he memoirs brought in just under $450,000.
19. Rutherford B Hayes (1877-1881)
As a young man, he studied to be a lawyer. As president, the Compromise of 1877 would haunt him, keeping him from accomplishing very much. As president, he banned alcohol from the White House. He also was the first president to use a phone - his phone number being 1.
20. James Garfield (1881)
You may remember Garfield as being the president who was shot because he wouldn't use the Spoils System to give someone a job in the government. Doctors were unable to find the bullet, so he would die in the White House weeks after being shot. Something interesting about James Garfield is that he was able to write with two hands at the same time, in different languages!
21. Chester Arthur (1881-1885)
Though a strong supporter of the spoils system, Chester Arthur passed the Civil Reform Act, limiting the number of jobs the president could give away to people. He became unpopular for signing the Tariff Act of 1883. Though untrusted when he became president, he would leave office widely respected. He was also known for owning 80 pairs of pants and changing which pair he was wearing several times a day.
22 and 24. Grover Cleveland (1885-1889, 1893-1897)
Grover Cleveland was the first democrat to be elected president since the Civil War. He is still the only president to serve non-consecutive terms in office. During his first term, in an effort to balance the budget, Cleveland refused to pass a law giving pensions to veterans. Due to this he lost the Election of 1888. Four years later, the American people were unhappy with the current president so they re-elected Cleveland. President Cleveland is the only president to be married in the White House.
23. Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)
Benjamin had an advantage when he ran for the presidency because he was the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison. He struggled with the popularity of tariffs, much like Cleveland had. He would not be successful in convincing the country that he was right, losing to Cleveland in the election of 1892. While president, he would be the first to have a Christmas tree in the White House (today a huge tradition).
25. William McKinley (1897-1901)
