Lesson 3: Salutary Neglect and the French and Indian War
The colonies continued to grow through the early to mid- 1700s. As they grew, their ability to trade expanded. Navigational Laws, passed by Parliament in England, was meant to keep trade solely between the English and the colonies, but due to salutary neglect, the colonies traded with other countries as well. Salutary neglect is a term used to describe England's non-enforcement of trade laws. This salutary neglect occurred up until the French and Indian war. French and Indian War
Something interesting about wars is that the same wars are called different things by different countries and in different places in the world. While Americans call this war the French and Indian War, Great Britain calls it the Seven Years War. In United States History, we tend to focus on the fighting that happened within the boundaries of the United States and completely ignore the fighting that also occurred in Europe. In fact, the French and Indian War or Seven Years War was a world war, the fourth to occur. A world war is a war that includes countries around the world, particularly "civilized" countries (European countries). Typically, we only think of World War I and World War II as world wars, but here is a list of nine world wars that have occurred, up until today:
1. 1688-1697: War of the League of Augsburg/ King William's War
2. 1701-1713: War of Spanish Succession/ Queen Anne's War
3. 1740-1748: War of Austrian Succession/ King George's War
4. 1754-1763: Seven Years War/ French and Indian War
5. 1778-1783: Wars of the American Revolution/ American Revolution
6. 1793-1802: Wars of the French Revolution/ Undeclared French Revolution
7. 1803-1815: Napoleonic Wars/ War of 1812
8. 1914-1918: World War I
9. 1939-1945: World War II
The French and Indian War, as it will be referred to throughout the rest of this lesson, began because of a dispute over land. In the map below, the disputed land between the English and French is the blue and red striped area.

The beginning of this war was due to colonists wishing to expand. Relations between England and France had long been rocky, so it was little wonder that something small and simple would set off the entire war. Watch this video about the war: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vKGU3aEGss
